Light Writing is an event-based research project into the relationship between word and image in experimental film and video led by Dr Duncan White.
The exhibition programme curated by Steven Ball and Duncan White features works by historically significant, established and emerging contemporary artists, encompassing a range of approaches to mobilising the visual, semantic and linguistic with puns, palindromes and performance; referencing literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis, poetry, and media.
The show opened on October 7 2010 in the Window Gallery, Central St Martins School of Art and Design, with a live performance of White Calligraphy Re-read in the Window Gallery by Takahiko Iimura, combining the written word, film and the body. The screening programme included work by Steven Ball, Ian Breakwell & Mike Leggett, Steve Hawley, Louis Henderson, David Lamelas, Laure Prouvost, Richard Serra, Erica Scourti, John Smith, pete spence, Maria Theodoraki and Ryszard Wasko.
The programme then moved to Banner Repeater at Hackney Downs train station on 3 December 2010 – 23 January 2011.
A new edition of Lightwriting exhibited at Sheffield Institute of Arts, Sheffield University from 3 – 23 December 2011 featured work by Steven Ball, Ian Breakwell and Mike Leggett, Steve Hawley, Louis Henderson, David Lamelas, Laure Prouvost, Richard Serra, Erica Scourti, John Smith, Pete Spence, Maria Theodoraki and Ryszard Wasko.
